Founded in 1950 with 10 employees in a small Bavarian town in Germany, HBM (Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik) has become a leading international manufacturer in the field of test and measurement. The first products developed and produced by Karl Hottinger were amplifiers and inductive displacement transducers. In 1955, the company moved to Darmstadt, Germany, and the production of strain gages commenced, marking the beginning of an on-going success story.

The next decades were characterized by expansion and innovation: Already in 1973, HBM founded its US subsidiary in Marlborough, USA. In 1997, a Chinese subsidiary along with production facilities was founded in Suzhou. In 2008, HBM expanded its portfolio with additional Data Acquisition Systemsdata acquisition instruments and software solutions by purchasing the companies nCode, LDS and SoMat.

Further milestones in the company's history were the first calibration laboratory in the German Calibration Service (DKD) in 1977, ISO 9001 certification as the first company in Germany in 1986 and accreditation of the test laboratory for EMC and equipment safety in 1991.

Expansion and growth always focused on the goal of developing high-quality, innovative products to optimally support customer projects all over the world. Recent product innovations include T12 digital torque measurement systems launched in 2006 and QuantumX universal data acquisition systems in 2007.

Today, customers worldwide rely on the perfectly matched components of the complete measurement chain that is available only from HBM.
